CHAPTER ONE
RESTLESS NIGHT

The room was dark, only soft beams of the moonlight breached through the fluttered light sheer drapes hung on the big window sill that brought a dim light into the room. The wind that blew through the opened window brought no fresh air, instead it was dry and hot. No wonder then, since no rain has been poured upon the east region for months, more than two years. In three months it will be complete three years without rain on the vast land of Harthford. Not even a single cloud that promising rain during the time to give hope for the people who were struggling with the crop. The rivers significantly drained, the water level of wells slowly but sure was decreased under the scorching sun.

The figure in the bed shifted restlessly. Few strands of long golden hair has escaped the once neat braid. The hot air in the room added more uncomfort for her disturbed mind. She wished for cool, refreshing wind and more, she prayed for rain. Not she prayed for the people sake though, she could not care more for those nobles who would still able to enforce their subjects to tend their lands, to brought water from the poorer area of peasants that had more water remained. But her father could not afford to paid more, not when the harvest gave less and less money. So he struggled with the shallow water that still run in the small river through his small land.

That evening her father called her into his study room. Weary, grave and despair showed on his face. Carefully he told her solemly their grief situation. If there was no improvement with the weather, soon they would not able to plant anything on their land. No harvest, no money brought in, less food to feed the servants. So some of them soon would be sent home for the master had to save his resource to endure the drought. A girl she might be, but her mind was bright and sharp. Her father taught her many things, even bother to paid a governess to train his only daughter the manner of a Lady, tutors to taught her knowledge and the world despite they held no high social status nor noble blood. His father was a mere lord of small land in the Harthford, the vast land ruled by Lord Vardilmiard.

It was when he had saw his little daughter impossed ellegant manner of a young lady and spoke some of wit that she might got from her frequent time spent with the Lord's only daughter he had decided. She would be raised like a proper lady then she would grew up into a charming beautiful Lady. He wanted her to be well married, and had better life than what he could provide. And apparently now he only could provide less and the education he gave to his daughter came into fruit. A marriage was offered for his daughter hand from a rich young Lord from the far north land. The young Lord was bewitched by her beauty at the summer festival months ago. He was visiting Lord Vardilmiard on his trip from the neighbour kingdom to the capital, paid honor to the king before he returned to his own domination. During his brief visit, the young Lord inquired his daughter company and found that the young girl was well educated despite her inferior background and thought she would not bring him shame to become his wife.

Abruptly the girl rose from her bed, throwing the thin blanket aside and stepped to the window. Midnight was long passed and dawn would not come soon. No use to stay in bed when her eyes refused to close and her mind against to rest. She shoved the drapes aside and planted her hand on the window sill, starring at the dark land outside her window. The land was suffer now, the thick green grasses had been absent to grasp the soil with its roots and long forgotten that they were once exist like a thick nature trapesty covering the ground. In the day, dust was carried by the dry wind on the survace, cracked soil extended accross the Harthford. She understood that his father only wish the best for her, yet she could not bring herself into the thought marrying the north Lord without feeling irk. He was polite, pleasing and so much a gentleman. But still, she could not feel any affection toward the Lord, she respected him thought. Molliene said in playful manner that she was expecting a beautiful ceremony and demanded to be invited to her wedding. To her dear friend tease she only shook her head weakly with a forced smile, tired of the repetitive words she said, that she would marry to a good man and should be grateful for the fortune she would have.

She sighed and about to turned back to her bed when her eyes caught an unsual sight from the castle of Vardilmiard. The castle was unusual lightened, yellow light swarm among the walls indicated that most of the habitant were awake at the night. She watched in curiousity. She wanted to go there badly and asked, "Has he been found ? Is he allright ? Where they found him ? Can I see him ?" But the night was not the time her father was going to consent to let her go. She was wondering now, if Molliene now glad that her dear older brother returned. Weeks ago a search party was sent on mission upon the disappearing of the male heir of Harthford. And another bigger party followed after days of failure. Lord Vardilmiard was angry at first to the guards that usually shadowing his son for the moment they let their guard down, the young man slipped away and never return. The anger grew into worry and worry became despair that the Lord announced a fortune for those who could bring his son back. Molliene was crying for her dear brother, she prayed every day that he would come home save and sound.

Serenity laid back to her bed, trying to close her eyes and waiting impatiently for the morning to come. When the sun peek over the horizon, she would flee immidiately to Vardilmiard castle and found out the news. Breakfast was not necessary for her then, for she could have one at the Vardilmiard with Molliene. Moreover, breakfast was necessary to avoid, so she did not need to attend her father who surely expected her for a consent answer of the marriage proposal. So then after a short bath, she hurriedly changed her night gown with the blue gown her maid has prepared and brushed her silky hair. She quickly run into the stable and saddled one of the steed thus escaped to her best friend's castle.

Andrei taught her horseriding, it was started with a tease that soon turned into challenge. Andrei doubted Serenity even could go near the beast since she was so sheltered like his sister Molliene. But later he learned not to throw a challenge to the strong-willed girl. Serenity did not stop only touch the horse, she went further by climb up to its back. She was screaming though when the beast jerked forward and run away, carried Serenity who gripped tightly onto the horse's neck and called Andrei for help. He swore not to provoke her ever again, after he saved her, he begged Serenity not to tell the incident to his father. He would definitely get scolded mercilessly all day for that. The girl who was scare to death before smiled over sweetly and mischievious glint over her blue eyes. She would be silent, as long as he taught her how to ride the horse. The long argument was tiring and finally he submited to her threat. He trained her secretly, wished nor his father or her father to never found out.

Kennael dismissed the maid after the breakfast served on his dining table. He glanced whistfully to his daugher usual chair which at that moment was empty. A stabbleman informed a horse was missing, no doubt the horse was taken by his daughter. He still held a little grudge toward Andrei, he would have very much strangled the young man for teaching her daughter to ride, if only he was not Lord Vardilmiard's son. Once he was satisfy by the thought of a prospective marriage seeing the closeness of Serenity with the young heir of Harthford. But time went by and his hope dissipated knowing the love between them was as good as siblings. Yet he did not throw away expectation for a fine young man no less master of a good house would come to ask his daughter's hand.

She was fourteen when young men noticed her beauty and asking his permission to court the innocent girl. He waved all of them for he found none of them was worthy of his little angel. They were good men, but not good enough in his eyes to take care of Serenity. Knowing her father's thought, Serenity sulkily said no man good enough to him unless the man presented a chest full of gold. He laughed and nodded his affirmation. He knew Serenity did not took it into her mind too much, since she as well paid no interest to opposite gender yet. She used to refuse came to summer festival every year, last time she stubbornly stayed in her chamber, saying, "What is the point of celebrating summer when we are so desperate of rain and pray the long torturous season soon to be over ?" Kennael patiently remind her the festival was an old tradition held to give youngsters a chance to meet possible suitors. He used to let Serenity stayed at home during summer festival, he did not want to deal with more young suitors at his door, wished to court Serenity. However at that time he successfully persuaded her to go, with a knowledge a young Lord was invited by Lord Vardilmiard to join the festivities.

He had no intention to push Serenity into unwanted marriage, but still he would keep tried to convince his daughter that the Lord was a good match, he was a good man and would treat her well. He would be a loving husband and made her happy. However Serenity ignored all of his praises of the young Lord and did not sway of any persuasion. He exhaled tiredly, if he keep pushing certainly he was going to involve in heated arguments with her. The girl could be so stubborn, just like her late mother, she would endure harsh confrontation with intention of winning. One more attempt, then he shall give up, Kennael thought.

A servant took the horse reign when Serenity mounted down. With wide step she climbed the grand stair led to front entrance of the castle. Guards and servants were not bother to scrutinise her, she was more than a frequent visitor. The Lady of the house loved Serenity as her own daughter before she passed away three years ago. Serenity deeply grieved for the loss, the Lady was her mother, a mother that she did not have since she was a toddler. Lord Vardilmiard was as happy as his wife to accept Serenity in his castle. Serenity was a merriment in his big castle, there always laugh and excitement everytime she came, which was so frequent to his liking. The Lord often felt guilty to rob the happiness from Serenity's father, the man was definitely missed the precious moments with his own daughter. But he would grimace too if he recalled some excitement Serenity brought. The girl could turn into a little chaos sometimes. The kitchen staff quickly shut the kitchen door when they saw the golden haired girl approached and the head cheff stood on guard in front of the door, rollingpin on her hand and eyes glared, did not affected by a pair of adorable clear big blue eyes that were starring innocently, sweet voice pleading, which everytime in the past defeated her. But as time went by she learned her mistakes, the kitchen almost empty after her short visit, when she came to made something edible the kitchen was left in a mess. Not that the other two children were innocent, no ... those two little devils were as well banned forever from the kitchen.

"Serenity !" Molliene cry greet her as soon as she entered the hall. A tight embrace suffocated her breath. Molliene was sobbing on her shoulder. "It was terrible, so terrible. My poor brother ... Ooh ... Serenity, he was so pityful."
She was relief that Andrei had been found, but Molliene words engulfed her with fear. "What ? What happened to him ? He is not dead right ?"
"God, no !" Molliene eyes went impossibly wide. Serenity noticed that her eyes were red and swollen, possibly because lack of sleep or she had been crying all night, might be both.
"Where is he ? I want to meet him." Serenity grabbed Molliene's arm and dragged her inside, she knew where Andrei's chamber. She had spent many times there since child, she knew every room like her own house. She could find some secret places which good for hiding during hide and seek game.
"He is not in his chamber." Molliene drew her hand from Serenity's hand.
"Why not ?" Serenity tilted her head.
"You can not meet him." Molliene voice was trembling. "I have not been saw him since he was brought home last night. Father forbid me to come close."
"Why ?" Serenity knew there must be something really wrong with Andrei and she shivered, afraid for the man she loved as her own brother.
"I don't know ..." Molliene sounded helpless, her hands came up covering her face and she began to sob again. "There was so much screams last night ... The men were shouting ... They were fighting against something, or someone ..." Molliene grabbed Serenity's hand and squeezed tight, her expression showed fear. "Serenity, I was so scared ... I thought I heard Andrei yelled and he was laughing. Yet it did not like him, there was something in his voice, it made me shivered, his voice seem evil."
Serenity shook her head. "Molliene, you were imagining things. Now come, show me where he is." She took Molliene's hand.
"No." Molliene dragged Serenity to her room instead.
Once they were inside, Molliene began pacing back and forth. She was biting her nail, a habit whenever she was nervous. When she stopped pacing, she looked at Serenity who was patiently waiting her to say something. "He is in the dungeon."
"Dungeon ?!" Serenity cried in shock. "Are you sure ? Not joking ?"
"Serenity !" Molliene glared, insulted that Serenity thought she was kidding upon a serious matter.
Serenity sat down on one of cushioned chair. "Forgive me, but it was so confusing, what happened ?"
Molliene did not answer immidiately and resumed her pacing across the room. "A priest came at dawn. I ... I managed to sneak down. But I could not go further without anyone notice. I heard someone was chanting, I heard shouting and yelling. I thought it was the priest who was chanting, the chanting went louder and louder since the laugh, Andrei was laughing as if mocking everyone there who shouted and yelled at him, mocking the priest."

Serenity was listening intently, she was worry and as much agitated as Molliene to hear about Andrei well being. Lord Vardilmiard had given a strict order that no one was allowed approach the dungeon without his direct permit. Unfortunately he had left so early in the morning with several men who found Andrei. The curiousity was too much so they could not wait until he returned. Quietly they snuk out toward the dungeon. But before they reached the south wing of the castle where the dungeon was, the head servant caught them. Thinking fast, Serenity made an excuse of the late breakfast. Molliene followed, she complained that they were starving, maid had not served any meals yet, so they decided to go to the kitchen asking for food. The old servant quickly sent them back to Molliene's chamber, thinking to save the kitchen from pillage and let the chefs worked in peace. They tried again after breakfast. But the dungeon entrance was guarded now so once again their attempts met failure.

They keep their eyes on the dungeon while waiting Lord Vardilmiard to return. Everytime someone was out of there, Serenity and Molliene confronted them, demanded any information regarding Andrei and what was happening inside. No one spoke a single word, too afraid to defy their master. Serenity concluded after observed their hesitancy that they were even too confused about the situation to explain anything. It was the priest who at least gave them an answer, but his words were far from satisfying and his riddles raised their uneasiness instead.

"You should not aproach. It's dangerous. You may get hurt. There was an ancient darkness, an old evil."
"My brother isn't evil !" Molliene was upset.
"You don't understant, girl ! He is not your brother !" The priest hissed. "Do not come near." Then he left with that warning.
Molliene was angry. "My father will explain everything. He must, else I insist to go there by myself, with or without his permission. You are coming with me, Serenity."
"I will." Serenity nodded, she was as well determined.

Lord Vardilmiard arrived late in the evening. Serenity and Molliene rushed to his study room only to find out that it was empty. A servant told them that the Lord had retreated to his chamber, wished not to be disturbed. The servant convinced them to left the poor man alone, he needed his time to rest his tired body and mind. They were disappointed but knew they had no choice but wait. Serenity left with a promise to return in the morning. Her mind full of speculations and questions about what had happened to Andrei, how they could help him, when he would be fine again and brightened their days with his cheerfulness. Serenity missed Andrei, she missed his gentle smile, his warm eyes and foolish jokes. Andrei was a good man, he followed his father path, dedicated to his people and a loving brother. Serenity could not sleep again that night, worrying Andrei and wondering what misfortune he had went through.

When Serenity and Molliene finally talked to Lord Vardilmiard in his study room, their curiosity and impatience faded. The poor man looked misserable, Serenity recalled her own father distress when telling their grief situation. The Lord sat on his chair, he looked worn out, his usual gentle eyes lost their shine, his face fell and grim. He tried to smile to ease worriness from the two girls who were standing in front of him, but they only saw a wry smile.
"Father ..." Molliene dropped on her knees, grasped his father's hand softly, tears were brimming on her eyes, ready to fall on her cheek.
"It will be all right, child." Lord Vardilmiard patted Molliene's hand. "The priest is trying his best."
"Why the priest, uncle ? What happened to Andrei ?" Serenity's voice was sad.
The Lord offered his other hand for Serenity to take. Serenity came closer and took his hand and let the man comfort her through his gentle squeeze on her small hand. He sighed when realized that he failed to sooth the girls who were staring uncertainly. He rose from his seat then, walked to one of the tall windows in his study room, looking far outside and took time to control his own emotion before answered their questions.

Andrei was found deep in the east forest, which seemed more haunted now when the trees were whitering due to the harsh weather. He was burried under the ruined small cave for days. Instead weak out of famish, he was too strong even for several fresh men who tried to restrain him and prevent his escape. Andrei did not recoqnize any of his father's men, he did not even remember who he was. He was found went rampage, violent and cursing endlessly. He looked at everyone with hatred, threatened to kill any of them who dared to touch him. And more of it, he would laugh at them, which made everyone chilled with eerie feeling. The men thought Andrei was just lost his sanity after trapped alone in the darkness under the ground for a long time. But when he keep shouting and said he wanted a revenge against the kingdom, the men suggested Lord Vardilmiard to call a priest. They were afraid their young Lord was possesed with evil souls that dwelled in the forest. There was stories that the east forest once was a battlefield of the greatest war Golden Kingdom ever went through, where many innocent lifes  lost and the kingdom went through the darkest periods of its history after.

The priest told Lord Vardilmiard to find the evil source and looking for anything seemed suspicious, however he gave a strict warning not to touch or brought back anything they found, afraid the evil would spead through the cursed items. They did not find much, just a broken claypot with smelly dark liquid, they believed it was blood, which began to dry on its surface and a piece of shattered dusty mirror. They went deeper through the cave and found it led to several dark tunnels. They splited and returned with nothing else found. The priest, however, sunk into a deep thought, muttered repeteadly, "Blood ... mirror ... Blood ... mirror." Then he locked himself in one of guard's room in the dungeon, burried himself in piles of old dusty books he ordered to bring from his house.

Serenity and Molliene were frightened. What evil creatures that was residing in Andrei's body ? Molliene sobbed thinking of the horror her brother had when facing the evil being. Serenity, while trembled of what happened to Andrei's poor soul now the evil took his place inside his body, tried to be strong for Molliene who was broken by the news.
"Molliene, we will find a way ... Andrei will be saved. We will not give up, Andrei need us, we must stay strong." She hugged Molline's shaking shoulder.
"That's right." Lord Vardilmiard knelt down, he lifted her daughter's chin. "Andrei will be with us again soon. Do you believe me, Molliene ? I will do anything to bring him back, anything ..."
Molliene wiped her tears and nodded. "Promise ?"
"I promise." His voice was assuring.

"Be careful, Ladies." The man halted when he stepped down the stairs and carefully led them through the dark corridor. Serenity and Molliene followed closely, their hands intertwined in tight hold. Serenity was warily eyeing the dirty rough walls they were pasing through. The air was suffocating with unpleasant smell, cold and humid. The floor was dusty and spiders web filled the ceiling, some dangled halfway on the wall to the floor. Serenity creeped, praying that no spider would fall on her hair and crawled on her skin. She swayed the torch she was holding so she could make sure no spiders on her or Molliene's dress. Molliene would screamed frantically seeing spiders, she was afraid of them as much as Serenity. They held their breath when the man stepped down deeper to the lowest level of the dungeon. Lord Vardilmiard usually held the criminals in his prison, he rarely placed them in the dungeon. To place them in the lowest level only meaned that the crime was great or the criminal was considered very dangerous.
"Serenity ..." Molliene whispered. "Is Andrei really placed in the lowest floor ?" She could not believe that her father thought Andrei would endanger anyone to deserve the most awful place.
"It seems so, Molliene." Serenity replied weakly, could not hide her sadness.

"We are almost there. Please remember, my Ladies, do not come too close. Follow what the priest said precisely. He might looked like Lord Andrei, but he was not himself." The man warned for the third times.
"We understand, sir." Serenity held her composure, did not want to give the man any doubt that they would act reckless. "Please lead the way."
"Very well, just warn you. The Lord would extremely angry if anything happened to you while you are here. I do not want any of us deal with the consequency."
"You will not." Serenity's tone gave the man no chance to speak again.

When they reached an iron door, the man knocked and a peep hole slided open from the inside, showing a pair eyes that gleamed, reflected the torch flame. Soon, sound of collided keys and a creak of door hinges echoed throughout the silent rooms. They stepped inside and the door closed behind them. Someone walked down, approaching in hasty steps. Molliene hide behind Serenity, the dungeon was scary even in the midday, no light except the torch they were holding and some that attached to the wall. She was breath again realizing it was only the priest. He did not say anything, his eyes were watching the girls intently then he turned to the man accompanied them.
"The Lord gave his permission." He explained briefly.
"Unwise decision." The priest growled. "I already warned you. Stubborn girls."
"I want to see my brother." Molliene said indignantly.
"As you wish ..." The priest replied coldly and turned away.
They stared the man and when he nodded, they followed the priest.

Inside a dark cell, a figure sat on the floor behind the metal bars that stood from the ground up to the ceiling. He was still, limp and no sign that he was awake. Metal cuffs on his hands chained to the wall, his legs held in stocks. Even under the minim light, they could see his bruises. He looked thinner, his hair was unkempt, his cheek was haggard, his clothes torn and dirty. Andrei looked so filthy and dishevelled. Molliene covered her mouth, too shocked with the sight.
"Andrei ..." She was choked.
Serenity stepped forward. "Andrei !"
The priest grabbed her arm, "No !"
Molliene keep calling her brother, wishing he could hear her and answer. But Andrei was not respond, they were afraid that he was dead. Slowly he began to stir. His eyes were hollow but gleam, cold and sharp. He smiled when seeing people were standing in front of his bar. His smile grew to a wicked grin, realized there were young girls among his visitors. His evil grin sent chill to Serenity's body.

He reached out, "Come ..." His voice was hoarse and cracked, yet his tone was enticing.
"Andrei !" Molliene rushed forward, reached between the metal bars to her brother. Suddenly she jerked back harshly, a guard pulled her away from the cell.
"Stay where you are !" The priest yelled. "Fool !" He grithed his teeth.
Andrei chuckled, he rose slowly from the floor. "Come to me ..."
It was then Serenity and Molliene got a better sight of the man behind the bar. Strange symbols was writen all over his face and his exposed skin, spells that restrained the devil. "Come, don't be afraid ..." He seduced with smooth tone, so alluring despite his deep intimidating voice.
"You can't get them, evil ! Not when I am here." The priest pointed his staff.
Andrei's laughter made them shruddered. He glared to the old priest hatredly, threatened with his icy glare. He sneered and began to curse the priest, harsh and rude words flew through his blackened lips.
Serenity was upset. He was not their Andrei, their Andrei whose smile and laugh would infected others, whose eyes full of warmth, whose voice was calm and conveyed his kind heart. Their Andrei would not purposedly hurt others with his words. Andrei that they knew had gone, replaced by a horrible evil creature that claimed his body.
"Devil, what did you do to Andrei ?!" Serenity yelled angrily.
"Give him back, give us my brother back." Molliene cried.
"But of course my sweety, if you will to trade yourself for him." Andrei smiled.
"Never !" The priest shoved him with his staff. "You evil spirit, leave the girls alone, let the man's soul you held captive free !"

The room was silent, Serenity and Molliene were laying unmoved in bed, staring at the ceiling, looking at nothing in particular. Their mind were replaying what they witnessed in the dungeon. After dinner Molliene asked Serenity to stay the night, a request that Serenity agreed to comply. Often in their childhood they sleep together, with Andrei on the floor in the morning, thrown from the warm bed where the two little girls were laying accross, the sheet tousled and pillows scattered arround the bed. Lady Vardilmiard would enter the room with her soft laugh and woke them with a kiss, told them to have a bath and promised delicious breakfast. Serenity really missed her now, if she was here now, surely she would comfort them with her feminime soft hands, soothing with her melodious voice and send their wary far away.
"Aunty is watching us, she is protecting Andrei from heaven. So, Andrei will be allright. He is strong, he will come back to us." Serenty said.
Molliene gave her a small smile and nodded. She knew her father would do his best and she had Serenity, a friend and sister she could always rely on. With the thoughts, she entered the realm of dreams, where Andrei opened his arms wide, laughed when she jumped to his tight embrace.

CHAPTER THREE
DISTRACTION

Sophie opened the window and the balcony door widely, let the morning fresh air and bright sunshine entered the spacious chamber. The sight of the palace splendor under the morning light caught her amazement. The palace was so grand, never in her lifetime she saw a castle was built as strong as the palace, yet it also designed so beautifully, towers stood high to the sky, the tall pillars were decorated with simple carvings, the walls were smooth and ellegant trapestries hung from the high ceiling to the floor, windows and doors were strong yet its curved shapes gave softer look of their sturdyness, and she wondered how the maids keep the marble floor shiny. She liked the garden as well, the colorfull blooming flowers surrounded a small fountain in the center, trees grew at the edge with benches placed under their shades, in one corner a small round gazebo situated in the center of a clear water pond with a railed  narrow bridge. It was one of several beautiful garden in the palace, so she heard from the palace maids, and she already made a plan to explore those gardens while proceed her own 'perfect' plan. The old maid smirked, satisfied that she could make the table turned, she was going to make an advantage from Serenity's 'crazy' mission. Her smile was wider when she imagined her plan was succeed.

Soon Sophie broke from her little trance and went to the large canopy bed in the room and pulled up the blanket, uncovered a girl who was sleeping beneath. She put her hand on her hips and sighed seeing the girl on the bed laid undisturbed. Gently she shook Serenity's shoulder. "Miss, get up."
The girl pulled a pillow and covered her face with it. "Let me sleep a while longer." Her voice was muffled.
"No." Sophie took away the pillow. "You should wake up now, I will not let you miss breakfast with the royals. You definitely must attend the dining in your best appearance, and don't you even think to show up late." The maid lifted Serenity's shoulders and made her sit on the bed. "Now, get up and take your bath. I will prepare your dress." Sophie impatiently pointed to the adjacent bathroom. "Lady Molliene !" She scolded, seeing the girl was sitting, unmoved from the bed, her eyes still closed.
"Fine ..." Serenity opened her eyes unwillingly and dragged her feet to the bathroom, she was still tired from the long journey. "I still remember how you against to come here, why you are so excited now ?"
"Well, meet the royals, let alone stay in the palace are nearly impossible for us because of our station. Now the opportunity has come, why not make the best of it ?" Sophie nervously tried to hide her excitement, it won't be good if Serenity found out what she was planning. "I'll forever remember this precious moment and someday I'll proudly tell others that I have spent several wonderful days of my life in the palace." She said, led Serenity thought away from suspicion of her true motive. She avoided Serenity's curiousity, busying herself chose a gown from the wardrobe.

"What do you plan to tell your friends how you can stay in the palace then ?" Serenity asked after she came out from the bathroom. "You can't possibly tell them that you manage to come because you agreed to an insane, fraud plan, right ?"
"Oh, I am sure I can come up with something." Sophie laughed nervously. "Now shush before anyone heard us."
Liar, Serenity thought. She knew that Sophie must be planning something. The maid ignored her complains and forced her to show up in the ball last night. She did not care that Serenity was very tired, they had traveled as fast as possible, only stopped at night to sleep in a lodge or inn and only if really neccessary. They had to reach the palace in time, considering their late departure from Harthford. Serenity said in finallity, "I need to sleep now, or I'll be ill and can't attend any events the next few days." Only then Sophie let her had her sleep in peace.

Serenity turned her eyes to her right and left, looking for a maid, guard, or anyone to ask direction. She left her room after Sophie shoved her out, hurried her to go without any clues where the dining hall was. She pouted, Sophie left the room as well soon she made sure Serenity rushed for the breakfast. Sophie seemed so impatient to go, too eager to acomplish the mission Serenity gave her, looking for any information of the High Priestess from palace servants. That was really suspicious, Serenity thought and wondering what was in her maid's mind. The sound of her shoes clicking filled the empty corridors, no one was seen after a while she was wandering arround. She worried now, she lost and would be late for the breakfast. The thought of Sophie's scolds made her run, wished to find anyone and asked for direction.

Zoisite walked in silent, following the tall man walking in front of him. He knew they were not heading to dining hall but he was not going to protest. It was the same every year, in the morning after the welcoming ball the Prince would avoid the supper with the ladies, his mood was bad and he became so grouchy. Thus Zoisite knew better not to evoke Endymion's anger. He smiled too much last night and keep his manner in check, hiding his growing annoyance deep inside and now he relished all of it, no longer pretended that he was pleased and enjoyed the turtoring dances. His face was tight, jaws clenched, no smile and his look was sharp, everyone stepped aside and flew from them soon they took a look at Endymion's expression, understood that the usual gentle Prince was absent at the moment. Endymion continued his steps through the desserted halls, taking a circle route to the kitchen. He had to take the long route in order to avoid his parents, any council members or ladies although his feet hurt much, they were sore and throbbing. His mood darkened when he remembered how he must endure the pain and keep his smile despite some of his dance partners stepped on his feet again and again, they appologized in embarasment, said that they were so nervous to dance with him.

Endymion grunted when he turned at a corridor and someone bumped onto him hard, and worse, the person was stepping on his poor foot. "Oh, I am so sorr ..." A feminime voice heard but Endymion cutted harshly, he was not at the mood for easy forgiveness. "Watch where you are going, little girl !" He snapped.
"Little girl ?"
"Yes, you are small." Endymion eyes scrutinized the girl in front of him. Slender, long golden hair, her face looked surprised but then her blue eyes narrowed and her pink lips pouted, she was angry at his words, "You should walk carefully, with your small feature people might not aware of your presence and unintentionally hit you."
"So, likewise Sir. You better watch your steps, look down once a while, for it is a little stone that makes you trip, not the big one." Serenity stomped and quickly left, thinking she had better not wasting her time with him.
Astonished with the girl's boldness, Endymion could only watch as the girl disappeared behind the pillars. Endymion turned to Zoisite, his brows raised.
"Lady Molliene Vardilmiard of Harthford from the east region." Zoisite answered Endymion's silent question.

Serenity sulked, she was lost, and would be late if she did not found the dining hall. She was glad at first when she run into someone though she was sorry to hit and stepped on him, she could ask for direction at last. But his comments arroused her anger and the question was forgotten. Serenity prefer bumped with wall, pole, pilar or anything, even anyone to that rude man. At least they would not insult her. She keep walking in desperation, but then she brightened when a blonde man was walking accross her way ahead. "Excuse me, Sir ...!" She jogged a bit to catch the man.
"My Lady ..." The man politely bowed. "How can I help you ?" He smiled, a boyish yet charming smile.
Serenity blushed slightly, "Oh, actually ... I am kind of lost and wish to go to the dining hall. Would you mind to give me some direction ?"
"With a great pleasure." The man offered his arm and Serenity put her hand on his crook.
"Thank you so much, Sir ..."
"Jadeite, please call me Jadeite, my Lady."
Serenity smiled at his hospitality, could not help to compare her companion right now with the annoying man she met before. "Jadeite, you are so kind. I am Molliene Vardilmiard of Harthford."
The man looked startled a bit but then his smile appeared. "I am honored to have your acquintance, my Lady." He nodded.

The dining hall was already occupied, full of ladies who were patiently waiting for the royals arrival. They sat properly, but when Serenity entered the room, many stared at her with unfriendly eyes. She already felt uncomfortable since she was the last one who showed up and awared of the others' dislike directed to her was added her nerves. Quickly she took the nearest unoccupied seat, to her relief, the guard soon announced the royals. "His Royal Highness King Artemis and Queen Luna !" Then the girls in the room stood up, bowed and shifted their attention to the opened door where a middle aged man was walking through, a beautiful woman on his side, her curly black hair was contrast with the man straight platinum blonde hair. The atmosphere in the room soon changed, suddenly the tenses she felt before was gone, the girls behaved so amiable and talked sweetly to each other. Serenity scoffed inside, witnessing their pretention. She was hungry but noticed they would not eat soon, until the Prince was present. The King greeted them and starting small conversations with some girls. Serenity surprised when the King addressed her, as Molliene, mentioned that it was her first time for the Summer Stay and wished her to feel at home. She was touched with the King's small attention and stated her gratefull for his kindness.
After some time waiting, everyone in the room seemed restless and the King awared of the situation, signalled a guard to come closer and whispered, "Find Nephrite and tell him to drag Endymion out of his hiding here immidiately !"
"Artemis, we can't let the girls starving." Luna said, knowing that Endymion would not attend like the previous years. The King sighed and nodded his approval, so Luna clinked a glass, demanded attention and told them to eat without the Prince. The girls were disappointed, but no one showed it blatantly. "Poor girls." Serenity giggled softly but she closed her lips when she saw a girl accross her seat was staring at her. The girl smiled then, and they both giggled. Serenity was glad she found someone to whom she could befriends with. "Ami Dylone, but call me Ami." The girl introduced herself. "I am Molliene Vardilmiard, please call me Molliene, I am pleasured to meet you." Serenity replied politely, she felt guilty, already she lied to her first friend at the palace.

They spent the afternoon together, Serenity found out more about Ami. Just like herself, this was also Ami's first Summer Stay but she knew everything about the events, she warned Serenity about the fierce competition among the ladies. Ami was the only child of Lord Dylone who ruled Marinrod, the west coastal region. Ami was humble, even shy despite her high status, Lord Dylone was well respected in the royal court since the King entrusted the strongest naval force of the Golden Kingdom under his command. However, Serenity admired her intelligence, her knowledge was impressive. When they were strolling the royal hall seeing the pictures of Golden Kingdom's ancient kings, Ami knew each king's history, when and how their reign started and ended. She was good with numbers and memorized fast. She even learned about herbs. She blushed when Serenity praised her and mentioned that she was envied her, how her father would be so proud of her.

"I always want to go to Harthford, I'd love to see the famous evergreen hills and the crystal clear rivers that run through the land. It must be nice to see different scenery other than sea like in Marinrod."
"Oh, indeed it was beautiful." Serenity sadly said, remembering her homeland.
"Was ?" Ami asked curiously.
"The land was suffered now, we have not have any rain for entire three years. There are hardly anything green in Harthford, and no water run in the rivers now."
"I am so sorry to hear that, Molliene."
"It's allright. The drought is worse but we still have hope that rain will fall again and our land regains its beauty and lush."
Ami nodded. "I pray so." Then her gaze directed to their right. "Oh, look ... It seems the girls finally catch the Prince."
"Catch ?" Serenity giggled. "Are they playing cat and mouse ?" She followed Ami's gaze. On their right, across the small garden there was two men surrounded with excited ladies.
Ami laughed at Serenity comment. "Well you can say so. The Prince always avoid the girls and they spend the day only to find where he is hiding."
"So that's the reason why he hasn't married yet. Perhaps he has no desire to marry, if he keep refuses to know his suitors' character then it's impossible he will attract to one." Serenity watched the commotion from distance. Besides he is too stiff, he looks like a statue and seem resents to socialize. Serenity resumed, observing the tall man who was standing with a rigid posture. His appearance was outstanding, he was very tall and his straight platinum blonde hair contrasted his tanned skin, a unique combination that definitely drew attention. He was handsome too, so naturally any girls would fight to claim his heart, he was soon become a king, the wealthiest and most powerful man in the Golden Kingdom. The man paid no interest to the girls, he closed his lips tight and only stared boringly. It was his companion who looked troubled with the ladies, he seemed distraught dealing with all attentions from them. Serenity simpered, recoqnized he was the rude man she encountered that morning. Serves you right, be polite ... Now in front of the Prince you must not show any rudeness, goodluck with that.
As if sensed being watched, the man looked up and their gaze clashed. Instantly Serenity turned away, her chin up and she acted proud. "Let's go somewhere else, Ami." She grabbed Ami's hand and pulled her away.

Jadeite strode with wide steps toward Zoisite study room and pushed the door open harshly. "Zoi !" He called impatiently.
"Don't you know how to knock ?" Zoisite, who sat behind his desk with books piled neatly in front of him sound annoyed, he lifted his eyes from his book, not welcomed Jadeite's interuption when he was so engulfed in his reading. Jadeite was usually worth no serious attention after all, Zoisite was the youngest among the four Generals but it was Jadeite who acted like one, so carefree, impulsive and reckless although he was improved a bit than years ago.
"Whatever." He dismissed. "Tell me about Lady Molliene Vardilmiard, does she come from Harthford ?"
Zoisite smirked, suddenly found Jadeite was more interesting than his book. "What ? Tired of Lady Reina ignorance already ?"
"Just answer my question !" Jadeite barked.
Zoisite folded his arms on his chest. "Ask nicely."
"You mean use my fist ?" Jadeite threatened.
"Drop the violence, Jed !" Nephrite who entered the room walked straightly to Zoisite desk, not bothered to avoid Jadeite who was standing in front of the door, blocking his way. Jadeite was shoved aside with grunt, Nephrite was much taller and muscular than him so he was the one who suffered from the collition.
"Neph." He hissed.
"Your girl is indeed from Harthford, has no intended and not interested with the Prince." Nephrite sat on the window sill by the desk, he smiled sadonically and Zoisite grinned evilly.
"I only want to know her origin, I don't need your other unimportant informations."
"Really ?" Zoisite was wondering, noticed that Jadeite was tense. "Is something wrong ?"
"No." Jadeite denied, but he look exasperated.
"Do we need to add her to Endymion's black list ?" Zoisite was still prying.
"No."
"Talking about the list, I still don't see Lady Beryl arround." Nephrite mentioned. "Had not she forgiven yet ?"
"Still on the top of the list." Zoisite returned to his book, now he found nothing to worry about.
Endymion was against the Summer Stay from the very first time it mentioned to him and his resistance grew stronger each year. His dispute with his parents heightened after the third Summer Stay, triggered by incident that Lady Beryl caused. She attacked the other Lady and injured her victim severely, ignited the Lady's family fury and bloodsheed between two noble families almost unavoided.
So the King and Queen compromised. They agreed to let Endymion crossed out some names from the guest list. That was how Endymion's black list started. He cleverly took advantages from the lenience, he dispensed every girl who annoyed him much, said he wanted to give his people the finest Queen. His bride should not only match his character and expectation, she must as well able to rule by his side. He found many excuses to reject the ladies.
Too agressive.
Too ambitious.
Too distracted.
Too passive.
Too fragile.
Too fake.
Too selfish.
Too eager. At this Jadeite had interjected, "You mean gimcrack." "Language !" Kunzite icy tone had silenced them instantly.
The list went on and on. But the invitations spreaded were not differ much. Queen Luna made sure that every ladies who just reached their coming age received the invitation and King Artemis spreaded the invitation to the further regions of his kingdom. Endymion could not say much about the matter.
Lady Beryl might not be invited again to Summer Stay, but she still able to visit the palace whenever her father's presence was required in the court. She used the opportunity well, since she did not have any rivals to have Endymion's attention during her father stay. Unfortunately her happiness was not last, for soon Endymion heard her arrival, he would went away from the palace, still attended every meetings he was obliged, but disappeared thereafter.

As Ami has predicted, the Prince did not join the dinner. But Serenity did not bothered to think about it, her mind was wandering about anything else. Sophie was not in her chamber when she returned to prepare for the dinner, so she had a palace maid assisted her. Sophie would be questioned when she came back after dinner had finished. Suddenly she  felt worry, what if Sophie failed, that the palace servants thought she was suspicious and got into trouble ? Quickly she dismissed the thought, she needed to stay optimistic and trust her maid. She should think how to approach the High Priestess and how to convince her to help. Andrei's fate now depended on her. The devil surely continued to strengthen her hold and corrupted Andrei.
"Molliene, are you all right ?" Ami softly asked with concern. "You look muse."
"Yes, yes I am fine, Ami. Just thinking about something." Serenity nodded. "Ami, you know a lot about history, tell me, do you know something about the War of Doom ?"
Ami gasped and her eyes widened. She carefully whispered, "That is not proper topic for dinner, Molliene. In fact, we should not discussing it anyway."
"Oh ?" Serenity face was fell.
"I know a little." Ami said, looking at her friend's disappointed face. "But trust me, it isn't wise talking about it, especially here. We'll be fall under suspicion, alerted the authority and get maximum stakeout even after the Summer Stay ends." She keep her voice low. "Some things are forbiden to talk openly and should be keep hidden. What you ask is one of many things this kingdom keep in secret, no one knows the exact truth, so the tidings only based on rumors."
"I see ..." Serenity muttered, the disappointment was still lingering.
Ami noticed. "You still want to know, don't you ?" She sighed when Serenity nodded.
"All right, since I myself don't know much, why don't we find out together ?"
Serenity lightened up, "Really ? Do you mean it ? Ami, thank you very much !" She circled her arms arround Ami's neck and hugged her.
Ami was blushing realized other girls arround now were staring at them with frown and whispering each other.
"But it's our secret." Ami emphasized.
"Sure."
"Then we'll meet tomorrow at royal library."
"We are allowed ?"
Ami nodded, "I've spent some times there before."

Ami shared a little information about the War of Doom. The war occured more than four centuries ago, before Helios, the previous High Priest death. He was the one who brought victory and restored the peace in Golden Kingdom. Although who was their enemy and how the kingdom fell from glory despite the war had been ended remained as mystery. When there was mystery, people always love to speculating, assuming and guessing to satisfy their curiousity. Thus rumors had spreaded, some believable, some should be doubted and some were just simply ludicrous.
The noice from the door turned Serenity attention. "Sophie ! Where have you been ? I was worry ... you were not here when I prepared for dinner. I thought you got into trouble."
"Trouble ? Me ? Miss, I am too old to got into trouble." Sophie laughed at Serenity worriness.
"Then, what did you get ?" Serenity demanded.
"The High Priestess ! Miss, you won't believe this !" Sophie exclaimed. "She is only a young girl, she is the same age of you ! So young, but posses enormous power !"
Serenity got excited, "Did you see her ?"
"Well ... no ..."
"No ... ?"
"But I heard that one of the Generals frequently visits her, Lord Jadeite." The maid quickly said. Serenity was listening, if Jadeite knew the High Priestess, then she had a chance to approach the Priestess through him. Pleased that she got Serenity's ear, Sophie keep talking. After a while, Serenity began to wondering. She asked Sophie to find about the High Priestess, yet all the maid was talking about were the four Generals. The information was quite interesting actually, each of the four Generals had an army under their command. They were also the Prince's personal guardians, advisors and confidants. They grew up and trained together with the Prince. Unless they left the capital for duties, Elysion security and defence were their responsibility. They were young, but no one doubted their capability, besides they had great power, one of the Generals even was descendant of Helios. "The royal family have power as well, although no one ever witnessing the said power." Sophie added.
"Enough, Sophie ... I wanted the information about the High Priestess, I don't care about the Generals." Serenity cut. "So, what the news ?"
"But you should, miss." Sophie disagreed. "You should know who your enemies are, their strength and weakness ... so you can overcome the obstacles and achieve your goal. The Generals are your obstacles, even if the High Priestess is willing to come and help they'll definitely opposed, she is too precious for this kingdom, they aren't going to risk her safety. If she is missing, they surely are going after you. General Nephrite is blessed by the stars, he can predict the future and sees through lies and pretentions, no one keep secret from him."
Serenity was thoughtful at the possibility that General Nephrite revealed her plan. She decided to avoid any encounter with him, she should extremely careful.
"Miss, are you sure to do this ?"
"I won't be here if I am not sure, Sophie. This is too risky, I understand ... But I have to save Andrei ..." She was staring the maid with teary eyes.
"Oh, my dear ... come here ..." Sophie opened her arms, drew Serenity into her embrace. "Of course you will save him, my sweet girl ... you are kind and mean no harm, I am sure you have blessing of the gods, you will save him ..." She patted Serenity's head gently.

Serenity was amazed when entering the royal library, the ceiling was high and the tall windows lined up side by side on the opposite wall of the door let the sunshine lightened the spacious oval room. The shelfs  made from oak woods were arranged in neat rows on the left and right side. On the center, some cushioned chairs put arround an open hearth. Between the windows there was a double door led to an open balcony, stairs to downstairs were at each side of the door, right before the wall. "Ami, this is amazing !" Serenity said with wide smile when she went out to see the balcony. It was spacious, decorated like a small garden, some small trees were planted on clay pots put on each edge with various flowers added its beauty among some wooden bench and round table.
"I know, I like to be here too." Ami smiled, glad that the girl loved the library. "But come, we supposely search books, right ?"
"All right."
"I'll looking at the left side, I know the history section is there. You can go to the right side, find anything about High Priests. If you find none, there are another old collections downstair."
"Yes ... then, we'll meet here at the hearth when we find the book ?"
"Agree."
Serenity browsed every shelf and checked every book, whenever she read a tittle close to what she was looking for, she pulled out the book only to put it back since she found nothing about High Priest Helios. She found one, but the book only provided his memoirs before the War of Doom. Other book recorded all of the Golden Kingdom High Priests and Priestess. She went back to the hearth and saw Ami was not there then decided to tell her that she was going to downstairs.
She found Ami was talking with a man by the tall window on the edge of the room. She seemed shy but enjoying the conversation. Serenity smiled, decided not to disturb them, somehow she felt she should not interrupt their time. She briefly watched the man and recalled he was the rude man's companion from yesterday morning. The man looked friendly, unlike his friend, Serenity thought grudgely. She looked arround carefully and hoped the annoying man was not there. Relieved that he was not arround, Serenity descended the stairs.

The room downstairs was dim and more crowded, the shelfs filled with older books, many of their pages were yellowing, the ink began to fade and even the covers were crumbled. She took them carefully, did not want to destroy the precious litteratures. The room was silent, apparently there was no one except her down there. She sighed tiredly after searching for some times then walked out from the isle in dissapointment and leaned on one of the shelfs. Her eyes tired from reading so much covers and books, so she closed her eyes for a while. 'Ancient Creatures', she read a book tittle when her eyes opened and suddenly felt inspired. That's it, I should looking for books about devils, demons or evil creatures. Andrei's is possesed by a devil after all.
So she continued the search until she was at one dark corner of the room, she was too occupied with her search to realize that a pair of deep blue eyes were watching her every movement. A book on the uppermost stack was likely what she was looking for, she stood on her tiptoes and stretched out her hand, trying to reach the book but it was too high.
"Now you must wish that you are taller." A deep voice was whispering right on her ear.
"Aaahhh !!!" She jumped, her back hit the shelf and her scream filled the silent room.
The man who scared her stood before her with a smirk, he look amused seeing her shock.
"You again !" Serenity angrily yelled after recovered from the shock.
"We meet again, little girl." He reached out above her head and hold the book Serenity wanted, offering it to her.
"Thank you very much !" She snatched the book.
"You should thank properly, like a Lady should."
"And you, Sir ... " Serenity retorted, "should appologize to scare a Lady like that."
"If you thank me first." Endymion challenged.
"Thank you, Sir. You are kind, but lack of decorum." She mocked.
Nephrite was about to interrupt and reprimanded the girl but refrained when Zoisite stood on his side, squeezing his shoulder while shook his head and hold his smile.
"Does she know who she is talking to ?" Nephrite asked bafflingly.
"No, she is new and did not attend the welcoming ball."
"No wonder ..." Nephrite said, still amazed how the girl spoke to Endymion.

"I am not your prisoner !!!" In the past, the very loud shriek would have made the entire inner temple habitants flinched or even caused some nearly had an heart attack. But as time went by, all the the priests were not even surprised anymore, everytime General Jadeite came to visit the High Priestess they expected the shouts, followed by any crashing noises from the High Priestess' quarter. Strangely, the usually reckless General composed himself so well and turned into the most patience man in the world everytime the priestess displayed her hot temper. Although they would not blame her entirely for the commotion since most of her fury were indeed ignited by the blonde General's actions. No longer they were wondering what caused the High Priestess anger, for it was always the same, either she felt too irritated by his overprotectiveness or she was infuriated by his dominating attitude.

"I want to go out and you have no right to forbid me !" The High Priestess stormed out from her quarter, walked angrily toward the main temple, obviously intended to go out through the temple front gate.
"I have King's order." Jadeite quickly blocked her way, realized that it was impossible for him to restrain her if she reached the main temple. He would have to let her go for he could not risk to cause a scene in the sacred place witnessed by many temple visitors.
"Move away !" A small flare flashed out from her fingertip, forced the General jumped aside to evade.
"Rei, that's dangerous." Jadeite grabbed her arm in order to supress her attack and stop her running away.
"I did warn you." A much bigger flame soon ignited from her free hand, created a firewall between them.
Crossing his arm, Jadeite jumped back to protect his face from the heat then run to the main temple back door. "Allright, allright !" He raised his hand to surrender and his another hand pushed the door open, signaling his approvement to let her go.
"What is it ?" Rei stopped and put her hands on hips, knew that it was impossible Jadeite gave up easily.
Indeed, Jadeite just tried to hold longer and persuaded her. "But not today."
"On your funeral then !" Another flare hit forward but Jadeite quickly went inside and closed the door.
"Stop it, Rei !" Jadeite shouted when the wooden door began to burn. "You may go. Today !" He shouted again when the fire did not ceased, "Right now !"
"Good." Rei smiled smugly when finally Jadeite opened the door carefully, afraid of another attack.
"Fine ..." He sighed tiredly. "But you should take guards with you."
"Everyhing you wish !" He quickly gave up, the priestess' face now redden with fury.
"You should say so earlier, then we would not have burned door." Rei flicking her finger and strode through, followed by the blonde General who was grumbling. She smiled victoriously, now Jadeite fully submitted, although temporary, she was finally free.

The temple, despite should be her sanctuary, was also her prison. She rarely leave the ground, she was literaly confined inside. Strolling in the capital was a luxury she hardly obtained and all those times she was always accompanied by a pack of guards, that unluckily drawing attention. She wanted to laugh, she only had Jadeite on her tail right now, so she was really truly free roaming the entire city without all the annoying stares from the people. She glanced back and giggled, Jadeite looked exasperate, she was sure because he was aware that the King definitely would ask for explanation of his careless leniency. But she did not care and she never mourn her fate that robbed her freedom. She always proud to become High Priestess. It was the King and the royal court that she blamed, they ordered her to stay safe in the temple, never took consideration to save her mind from boredom and ridiculous restrictions. Let them turtored Jadeite, he could use some 'advices' from the King while she would pretend to listen his reasons to keep her save inside the temple walls whilst she was meditating during the audience, at the end of the session she would smile sweetly, appologized and made false promise, last she would be thinking another time she could go out again and repeat the same process. She would not mind, as long as she could escape her prison once a while.

In the past, she easily ventured in the city, never bothered by the guards or crowd's attention. She walked in the city just like other commoners, only accompanied by her friends, enjoying their time without any burden that come from their station, never thinking of their duties, they were only like another and enjoying life. She always knew all of those would have come to an end, when they were all matured and took the responsibility of their status. She did not regret it, she accepted and embraced what came with the age accresion. What she should not have lost was what she regreted. The day Endymion left, his guardians as well retreated, so she lost not only her friends, but also her love she then understood that was unrequited one. Although now Jadeite frequently came, others' brief visits and accidental meetings with Endymion, their connection was never be the same.

"Be a good boy, Jed." Rei sternly warned as she was tidying her robe then pushed open the door to the main hall temple. She raised her chin, her eyes straight forward and she walked slowly in elegant light steps, she ignored the temple visitors who was awe at her appearance and bowed slightly as she passed through. She was not a royal blood that people bowed upon her presence, but she was the High Priestess, the chosen one bestowed with power by the gods whom even the King himself showed respect. She gladly accepted respect and awe, and she could deal with sadness when fear that she got from people arround, but not worship. She drew back immidiately when people saw her as if she was a real goddess. She was just a girl, an ordinary girl just like others, she wanted to be treated like one. Not like a divine being walked among mortals, who was too perfect to make mistakes and so selfless to dedicated all her time concerned about others misfortune and granted their wishes. She was too, felt emotions, experienced failure and disappointment, had longings and ideals, she was just another human.

Jadeite's gallantry disappeared as they leave the temple ground for he saw what Rei was wearing under her priestess robe. His rants only made the girl's smile wider.
"Do not fret, Jed. I wish to have a gentleman company, not a sulking boy." Rei nonchalantly stuffed her robe into a leather bag and tossed it to the man who was staring with disapproving look at her plain dress.
"Where and when did you steal that ? Whose dress is it ? The poor girl must be so devastated when her dress was stolen."
"Hush, Jed ... Silence, and let me enjoy the city." She brightened seeing the crowded market and soon slipped through the crowd.
Jadeite sighed in defeat, he had no option other than followed her arround like an obedience servant.

"Annoying, sufferable man ... Why such despicable man must live in this lovely palace ?" Serenity was entering her chamber with grumbles. She thought she was fortunate to finally met General Jadeite, tried to gather some information about the High Priestess thus asked a chance to meet her. The General had been in the city all day and returned in the evening, his mind seem disturbed at first, but he was friendly and charming when they were talking so Serenity felt encouraged to ask about the High Priestess. Suddenly, from nowhere the annoying man showed up, ruined her chance with his mockery. General Jadeite was about to meddling when she retaliated, but a sharp glance from the black haired man silence him instantly, he stepped back and joined General Zoisite standing behind. Jadeite looked confused at first at his friend's amused smile and meaningful look, told him to stay silent and watch. Soon he witnessed their insults he grinned like a fool. Serenity did not miss their laugh even she was bantering with their friends, she felt awful for the inappropriate situation. To save her dignity, she politely excused herself to General Jadeite and Zoisite, ignoring the rude man's tease of her withdrawal.

"Is everything allright, Miss ?" Sophie concerned heard her mistress distress.
"It should have to." The girl grumbled. "I met General Jadeite just now." She sat in front of her vanity and began undoing her hair. "Intended asking his help to introduce me to the High Priestes ..."
"Lady Reina." Sophie informed as she help Serenity with her hair. " Or Rei, as her close friends call her."
"Sophie ! Did you manage obtained more information about her ?" Serenity's spirit lifted. "Tell me !"
"Just a few, they told me that sometimes she spend her time in west garden, after the small wood that separated palace from temple ground."
"Then I will go there tommorow, hopefully she will be there too. Sophie, that was a wonderful news." Serenity smiled happily. "I will go everyday until I meet her, but if not so, I think General Jadeite will be kind to help."
Sophie was not too pleased of Serenity mentioned the blue eyed General. She heard a lot from other maids. Indeed the General was kind and always charming. He had a temper, but tolerable, he was also playfull, a pleasant trait to have as a man. If only he had not already declared his undying love for the High Priestess, she would not hesitate encouraged Serenity to get close to him. So she prefer if Serenity more acquintanced with other Generals. General Kunzite was well known as a stoic and perfect composed man, he was respected more than other three Generals because of so, beside his position as the leader of the four Generals. Sophie imagined that he would be a perfect man for Serenity, he would capable to control Serenity's mischiefs. General Nephrite too, she thought as a perfect match. He was less playfull than the two younger Generals, less stoic than Kunzite but his responsibility awareness and dedication made him second in position to Kunzite. To Sophie, his talent with the stars was an advantage to prevent Serenity's misconducts although she was really worry if he found out about their crime.  General Zoisite might be the most gentle among his fellows, but with his intelligence he could be a match and even outsmart Serenity's arguments. Sophie was satisfied with herself, she would make sure one of the man fell for her mistress. The three were good men, she could not wish better men for her dearest girl as suitor. The girl was still ignorant about finding a life partner, and her father who always sent away her admirers did not help it. So Sophie felt it was her duty, although she did not mean to replace a mother role, to find a good match for the girl, who was good enough so even Kennael could not refuse.

Serenity interrupted when Sophie began to tell her how great the Prince's Generals. Listening to Sophie's talk past few days confirmed her suspicion. The maid was playing a match maker. She was not going to let Sophie distracted her in order to save Andei. She told her about her unpleasant encounter with a certain man before Sophie uttered her boasting about the Generals. Sophie was listening intently when Serenity mentioned the man, she was curious who was the man that had General Zoisite on his tail. "The man, how is he look like miss ?" She added, "Maybe I can seek any clue from the maids so you can rid of his nuisance."
"Perhaps he is part of the King's court, I don't know ... He has short black hair and blue eyes. He was tall, but his height is nothing to his arrogancy and self contempt, which I am sure even reach the sky." Serenity said grudgely.
The Prince. Sophie realized, for she knew no one in the court who possesed the same resemblance was close enough with the Generals. She was shocked that Serenity already met him, several times, and never learned about his identity. "Well miss, I suggest you to avoid him at any cost. We shall afraid that he will make your quarrels known to others and that definitely harms Vardilmiard reputation and drawing attention." She warned, but deliberately did not reveal the man's identity, afraid if she knew, Serenity to avoid him as well as his Generals.
"Of course I will."
"Good." The maid relieved. She indeed had high opinion about the Prince's guardians, but the Prince himself was entirely different case. He was handsome and charming as well, she understood that all subjects in the palace were proud of their Prince, that he was a kindhearted man, just and loved his kingdom. Sophie should be impressed, of course she was, she knew the Prince would be a great King someday. However her aim was to find a husband for her mistress, not a King. Sophie had explored the palace and observed the habitants, including the Ladies who were invited to stay. They were all beautiful, lovely and charming, as expected from a noble lineage. That was a fault she found about the Prince, since he never pay attention to all beauty that surrounded him, there must be something wrong with the man.

When her maid once again tried to mention the Generals, Serenity decided she had enough. She told Sophie that she was not interested with those men, thus reminded her that they were in the palace for Andrei, not looking for a marriage offer.
"When they knew who I am, that I am just a commoner so inferior below their status, they will not even consider to marry me, Sophie. Only a simpleton indeed who chose a commoner when there are many beautiful, well educated ladies from his own social standing. Yet not to forget my lies, no man in his right mind want to ruin his own reputation, involves with an impostor."
"Young lady, you are so naive. Do not underestimate the power of love. For love, a man will even chalenge death, and sometimes love madness leads to destruction when blinded by unhealthy obsession."
"Oh, you talk as if love like that happen everytime. Tell me then, who is in your acquintance so fortunate to be blessed with such great love ?" Serenity scoffed.
"You." Sophie smiled and caress the girl's face gently. "You, my dear." Sophie continued when Serenity stared confusedly. "You are here, risking everything for Lord Andrei. Because of what ? You love him, you love Molliene. Am I right ? Now you tell me, is it impossible for  a man to fall in love with your beautiful heart ? To admire your bravery to sacrifice yourself for your beloved ?"
"You just trying to comfort me. I don't have bad intention, Sophie ... but it's still wrong, I lied to Ami, to many other people."
"And we will make it right in time, we will fix it together."
"Promise me you stop your idea to set me up with the Generals."
"Listen, miss ... we need them at your side when our plan is revealed, or failed, they can stand for you and defend you so you will not be punished."
"No, Sophie ... don't involve more people in this." Serenity begged. "We stick to our plan, promise me, please ?"
Sophie wanted to disagree, but seeing the girl depressed face, she had to give her word.

The wood looked so still and quiet, she began to wondering if a garden was indeed behind the wood. She recalled the east forest in Harthford and compared them. East forest once was so lushful as well, so green like the wood before her. But the wood did not have a scary atmosphere like east forest, the wood seemed a peaceful place. She confinced herself, she would be fine, the wood was a save place and she would find a beautiful garden at the other side.
"Are you lost, little girl ?"
The voice. The tease. Why ? Why he must be here of all many places in this spacious palace ? Why I must always meet him to hear his insults ?  Serenity complained. Slowly she turned back and there he was, the devil himself, standing tall in his arrogance as if he was above anyone else, with his evil smile, his eyes were sparkling with a promise of torture for her. She was sure that the chill she felt when saw Andrei's eyes in the dungeon was nothing compared to the chill she felt right now.
"No." She answered, made sure that her voice conveyed her annoyance and hatred.
The devil looked more amused with her deviance, his smirk was wider. "So what are you doing here, alone in the secluded place like a little lost rabbit ?"
"None of your concern, Sir. I assure you, I am not lost so leave me alone." Her voice was flat and cold, contrary to her cheerful tone when she greet Zoisite, who was standing behind the devil, "Good morning, Lord Zoisite."
"Good morning, my Lady." Zoisite nodded and returned the gesture with a smile. His eyes met Endymion's sharp eyes and he knew he should step aside and keep silent.
"Mind the manner, little girl, you are so sweet to my friend yet so rude to me."
"I show you good manner when you deserve it, my Lord." Serenity turned back to leave, entering the wood, decided to ignore the man.
"No, no ... Not yet little girl." Endymion grabbed her arm. "Don't running away again."
Glaring, Serenity pulled her arm back.
"Tsk, tsk ... So rude." Endymion shook his head.
"Did you just talk about yourself, Sir ?"
"So then the battle begins," Zoisite murmured. Endymion and the girl were arguing again and he would not interfere, why he should anyway. Zoisite was watching their banter in glee, rather, he was enjoying it. While he would cringe at Rei earpiercing scretch and afraid of damage during her verbal fight with Jadeite due to her violence, the banter between Lady Molliene and Endymion was quite entertaining.

Endymion was laughing when finally he let the girl left. Zoisite was wondering why Endymion seemed enjoying to annoy the poor girl.
"You still do not tell her who you are." Zoisite said.
"It's not my fault if she is so ignorant, Zoi." Endymion smirked. "And don't you try to tell her, don't ruin the fun." He said as if he left the wood.
Zoisite chuckled, again wondering if Endymion aware of his own odd behaviour. He used to avoid the girls, he silently turned away and left before any girls realized he was near. To Lady Molliene, Endymion made sure his existance was known, he initiated the conversation, arguments - which was the right term, he look satisfied and pleased when he dominated her attention. Zoisite was considering if he should warn Endymion. Lady Molliene obviously did not interested with the Summer Stay, she did not try to find out about the Prince, did not share the same wish with other Ladies in pursuing Endymion's affection, she was separated herself from others. Not all people, she spent her time a lot with Lady Ami, those two was inseparable. Everytime he saw Lady Molliene, Lady Ami was by her side. He actually was glad with the circumstance, without interuption he could talk freely with the shy girl. Often he would realize latter that Lady Molliene had left them alone. Whether it was because she did not interested with the conversation or else, he never thought much, as long as he had Lady Ami in his company, he did not think Lady Molliene was rude, he thought she was considerate. He understood Ami shyness to justify her solitary, but Lady Molliene was not shy. He speculated, perhaps she never wanted to attend the event but forced to come, that explained her late arrival. Why she was not excited with the opportunity to marry the Prince, he guessed, because maybe, she already had a lover. So Zoisite became really worry for Endymion.
